Conferences & WorkshopsFirst Annual Advanced Placement Summer Institute The East Mississippi Center for Educational Development (EMCED) in partnership with Mississippi State University-Meridian Campus will be hosting the "First Annual Advanced Placement Summer Institute," July 6-10, 2009. EMCED is offering workshops in the following subjects: English Language and Composition, English Literature and Composition, U.S. History, Calculus AB and Studio Arts. The Summer Program for Academically Talented Youth The Summer Program for Academically Talented Youth, July 5-24, 2009 is a three-week residential program and is designed for students in grades seven through 10 who qualify based on SAT or ACT results. Insurance Education for High School and Middle School Educators Applications are now being accepted for the 2009 Insurance Education Institute hosted by Mississippi State University. In conjunction with the Griffith Insurance Education Foundation, MSU will offer the IEI as a graduate level class in Insurance Education for high school and middle school educators. The class will provide 3 hours of graduate credit or 0.5 CEU, at no cost to the teacher, for successful completion. Millsaps College Advanced Placement Institutes Millsaps College will offer The College Board Advanced Placement Institutes from July 12 through July 17, 2009. The Mississippi Autism Institute On July 14-16, the Mississippi Department of Education (MDE) will host the Mississippi Autism Institute – a three-day workshop in Jackson aimed at instructing teachers and administrators on how to teach communication skills to children with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) and other developmental disorders. Dr. Vincent J. Carbone, director of a center-based clinic for children with Autism in Rockland County, NY, will be the key presenter for the workshop. Teachers will receive 2.25 CEU's and administrators will receive 15 SEMI's for attending all three days of the workshop. The workshop fee is $75 and the deadline to register is June 15. National Association for Sport and Physical Education (NASPE) Conference The National Association for Sport and Physical Education (NASPE) invites physical education teachers, coordinators, administrators, school health council members, health education teachers, school administrators, college/university physical education faculty, physical education college students and anyone else interested in “best practices” for high-quality physical education to attend the 2009 NASPE Summer Conference Series. The conference series begins July 22-24, 2009 at Ridgeland High School from 8:30 a.m. - 5:30 p.m. This conference will provide professional development opportunity for K-12 physical education teachers to earn professional development credit, expand their knowledge and energize their physical education program.

Required Training Session for School Nurses The Office of Healthy Schools will host a required training session for school nurses August 4-5 at the Marriott in Jackson. The first day will be a national training focusing on obesity management. Mississippi is the first state to provide this intense training for all our school nurses. The second day will include specific data on obesity in Mississippi and how we need to respond. Information regarding asthma, disaster preparedness, immunizations and data collection will also be provided. This is a great opportunity for school nurses to learn the most current information that will be used in response to student health issues. MS University for Women Best Practice Institute for Educators On September 18-19 the Roger F. Wicker Center for Creative Learning at MUW will host its first Best Practice Institute for educators. The focus of this year's institute will be Assessing Student Learning. There is no fee for participation but registration is required. CEUs will be available for $20.00. Nationally-known experts in assessment will present at the institute. Please mark your calendars now and make plans to send educators from your district!
Friday, September 18, the all-day seminar will be open to all educators on a first come-first served basis. In addition to Friday's Institute, there will be another component of the institute called the "Train the Trainer Assessment Institute." This will allow each school or school district to send one or more educators to BOTH days of the institute and these educators would then be committed to taking the knowledge/skills gained during the institute to all teachers/principals in their schools/school districts. Please call 662-241-6101 if you have any questions. 2009 MS Institute on School Health, Wellness and Safety Mark your calendars now for the 2009 Mississippi Institute on School Health, Wellness and Safety which will be held on September 23-25, 2009, at BancorpSouth Arena, in Tupelo, Mississippi. This is the only super conference in the state that addresses the eight elements of a coordinated school health program. This year's theme is Taking Charge of School Health - Making the Change. The Institute for Multi Sensory - Education The Institute for Multi Sensory - Education offers 30-hour comprehensive training October 5-9. The training programs provide; a multi-sensory approach to teaching reading, writing and spelling across the curriculum that meets your Response to Intervention (RTI) needs and the skills necessary to teach phonemic awareness, the alphabetic principle, vocabulary fluency and comprehension among other instructional methods.
